Being a father was one of the most magical things in Garry Junkuhn's life. When his sons chose to cut off contact, his life crumbled. With the help of a wise mentor and a midlife reboot, Garry reconnected with his family — and is now helping other fathers do the same.

Divorce is never easy, but when Garry Junkuhn told his sons he was moving in with his girlfriend, his sons chose to exit his life. He felt like four wild horses were pulling him apart. His life unravelled when he learned from a school email that his older son had decided to change his last name to his mother’s surname. It took two mentors and a long and challenging journey — inward and outward — to reboot his life and find his way back into theirs.

In this episode of Chatter That Matters, Garry shares the grief he experienced in losing contact with his sons for nearly three years and why he sold everything, moved to South America and started over. He shares his mentor’s great question: What is the gift inside your tragedy? The answer to this question reshaped his outlook and his life. It is a question that may shape yours as well.

Garry’s experience led him to create the 100k Fathers movement — a community that brings together men who have broken relationships with their kids. Their mission is to reunite 100,000 fathers with their kids, so they can experience the same joy Garry did when he finally reconnected with his sons. It’s an inspiring Father’s Day episode that serves as a reminder to never take your family for granted.
